Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third daughter in their family. As a young girl, her carnival barker father passed away, leaving Ruth's mother with no choice but to be a cleaning girl and waitress to provide for the family. Ruth was raised in a tenement community that was poor of Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. She left the school she attended just two years later in pursuit of the profession of acting. Her path was not without obstacles. While in New York, her first assignment was to shoot stills in crime magazines. acting work she wanted eluded. Then in NYC, she was employed at a bar, as the check-in lady before resigning before moving to Boston. The New England Repertory Company was the first position she held as a steady actor. The company paid her performing during the daytime working as an Usherette. She also studied drama and eventually graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
